Dinner across six stops

Six stops between the pier and the last spoonful

A dinner cruise out of Oslo comes down to a handful of things you pass and a handful of plates that arrive. Here are the evening's stops in a sensible order, from the gangway to the final stretch.

Treat the six stops as the shape of the evening, not a timetable. The crew sets the pace and the route, and the hour of departure shifts with the date.

  1. Quay

    Rådhusbrygge 2

The boat is docked at Rådhusbrygge 2, just before Piren restaurant, and the operator asks you to arrive 15 minutes before the cruise starts. Coat hangers are available on board for your jacket.

  2. Cast off

The Opera House from the water

First among the sights is the Oslo Opera House, whose marble and granite slopes meet the fjord at the edge of Bjørvika. Seen from a boat, it looks like it has risen out of the sea.

  3. Islands

    Colourful houses along the shore

Dinner is served while the boat moves, and the route winds through the islands past historic houses painted in strong colours. The three courses follow the season and are pescatarian, with a vegetarian option on request.

  4. Fortress

    Akershus on its rock

Akershus Fortress, begun in the late 1290s to protect Oslo and to serve as a royal residence, sits at the fjord's edge. On the cruise you see it from the fjord side, below the walls.

  5. Museum

    The Munch Museum

The new Munch Museum is among the sights that look their best from the fjord. The Oslofjord itself runs through Munch's work, including The Scream.

  6. Last stretch

Dessert and the lights of the city

Dessert is part of the dinner, and the cruise lasts 2.5 hours in all. The skyline changes as the sun sets and the lights come on; how much of that you see depends on the date and the sailing you choose.

What the boat passes

Three landmarks and a fjord

The Oslo Opera House at dusk, its white roof sloping to the water and catching the last warm light

A marble opera house at the waterline

Snøhetta designed the Oslo Opera House, which opened in April 2008 in the Bjørvika district at the head of the fjord. Its angled surfaces of Carrara marble and white granite make it look as if it is rising out of the water, and the roof slopes down to the ground so that visitors can walk up it. Beside the building, a sculpture of stainless steel and glass panels called She Lies floats in the fjord and turns with the wind and the tide.

Akershus Fortress on its hill above the harbour under a broken, cloudy sky

A castle begun in the 1290s

Akershus Fortress stands on the bank of the Oslofjord. Construction is believed to have begun in the late 1290s under King Haakon V, after an attack on Oslo in 1287 showed that the city's defences were too weak. It has been a royal residence and a military base in its time, and today it houses the temporary office of Norway's prime minister.

The Munch Museum tower beside the lit Oslo waterfront at dusk

The fjord Edvard Munch painted

The Oslofjord appears in several of Munch's paintings, The Scream and Girls on the Pier among them, and he kept a cottage and studio at Åsgårdstrand on its shore. The new Munch Museum is one of the sights the cruise passes, and from the water it shows its true splendour.

An inlet that is not quite a fjord

The Oslofjord runs about 120 km, north from the village of Bonn to the capital and then south to the Skagerrak. In the geological sense it is not a fjord, but Norwegian uses the word for inlets like it. The innermost islands each have a character of their own: Hovedøya has monastery ruins, Gressholmen is known for its rabbits, and Nakholmen, Bleikøya and Lindøya for cabins at the water's edge.

At the table

What is on the table

The dinner is three courses cooked by the chefs of Restaurant Einer, who are known for their commitment to quality and sustainability. It follows the season and is pescatarian, with a vegetarian option on request.

Three courses while you sail

Starter, main and dessert are served on board while the boat moves along the fjord, and the cooking pairs traditional Norwegian flavours with modern techniques.

Seasonal and built around fish

The menu changes with the time of year and centres on fish and seafood, so the dishes you eat in autumn may not be the ones on a summer sailing.

Dietary needs a day ahead

The operator needs to hear about dietary restrictions at least 24 hours before the cruise. Vegetarian dinners are available on request.

Tap water included, other drinks extra

Tap water comes with dinner. The bar on board is fully licensed and sells wine, beer and other drinks, which you pay for separately.

A refined dinner, not a large one

Guests praise the flavours and the staff, and a few find the portions small for the fare. Think of it as an elegant three-course dinner with a view rather than a big meal.

Live music in the background

Live music is part of the cruise. Guests describe a pianist playing on the lower deck, peaceful rather than loud, and one visitor seated on the upper deck wished for a seat near the piano.
